OU Spotlight: Freshmen Gymnasts
August 28, 2008

NORMAN, Okla. - The start of the fall semester on Aug. 25 brought four new faces to the OU women's gymnastics program.  SoonerSports.com sat down with Oklahoma freshmen Megan Ferguson, Natasha Kelley, Sara Stone and Hailey Wagner to see how the group was enjoying their first week of classes, time in the gym and the adjustment to college.

SoonerSports: You have been college students for a week now. How has that adjustment been?

Natasha: It was definitely an adjustment. Being homeschooled all my life, this week was my first time to ever be in a classroom.  The first day I was a little overwhelmed, but I think I have already gotten the hang of it and am really enjoying it.  The support system here is so great; everyone does everything they can to make our lives easier.

Hailey: It's going really good! I came from a big family, so that is a big change for me, not seeing them every day. But I have had a lot of free time and that has allowed me to get settled in.

Sara: It's been kind of hard, but I am getting used to it.  You just have to learn how to manage your time and take advantage of all of the services offered on campus and in the athletics department.

Megan: So far I am adjusting well; I haven't had any real problems that I can recall.

SoonerSports: Do any of you have a favorite class yet?

Sara: Sociology

Megan: Intro to Journalism

Natasha: It's kind of hard to tell after only being in each one twice, but so far I am liking most of them.

Hailey: I like my Sociology class a lot.

SoonerSports: How are you four spending your time outside of class and practice?

Hailey: Just hanging out with friends.  Still settling in to the dorms and college life.

Natasha: A lot of sleeping and resting, getting caught up on school work and spending some time with friends watching movies and on the internet.

Sara: Hanging out at the dorms with friends, mainly just studying and resting.

Megan: Learning time management! Trying to rest as much as possible and still getting organized. Decorating my room to make it more "homey".

SoonerSports: What has been your most cherished gymnastics moment up to this date?

Natasha: Winning 2005 JO Nationals and making the `06 U.S. team that competed at the World Championships.

Hailey: Making it to JO Nationals five times and accomplishing everything I did there.  I was sixth on vault one of those years.

Sara: I had never completed a Yurchenko 1 ½ and I did at the Károlyi's camp and won.

Megan: It would have to be winning beam at Nationals in back-to-back years and getting to stand on that first-place podium.

SoonerSports: How would you describe your individual gymnastics style to someone who has not seen you compete yet?

Megan: Energetic  - I don't like to stop moving.

Hailey: Overall I'm pretty laid back and I think that shows in my gymnastics. I would say that I am powerful though.

Natasha: I would say that I am more on the powerful side. I have a hard time with flexibility and dance and am really working hard on that during the offseason.  Those are definitely my weaker areas.

Sara: Powerful.

SoonerSports: All four of you were in the gym this summer during voluntary workouts and have now completed a week with the team all together. What are your thoughts on the OU program?

Hailey: I really like it, everyone is really nice. It's hard work, but I feel that it is all going to pay off when we look back on the season.

Natasha: I think we have a great program going.  I think K.J. (Kindler) and the rest of the coaching staff have done a great job of setting everything up. Conditioning is going really well and everyone appears to be getting their job done on their events.

Sara: From the coaching staff on down, everyone is on the same page as far as our goals for this season.  Everyone in the program is determined to make OU women's gymnastics a recognizable name at the national level.

Megan: All the girls are such hard workers and I feel privileged to be a part of the team.

SoonerSports: What are your goals for the upcoming season?

Natasha: I just want to contribute as much as I can to help our team make the Super Six. That's my main priority, personal goals come second.  If I do my job for the team to my capabilities, then I should do pretty well for myself as well.

Hailey: I just want to contribute to the team. Help everyone out in any way that I can.

Sara: I just want to be the best teammate that I can be by working my hardest on being the best gymnast that I can be.

Megan: Compete and represent the team to my fullest, and hopefully that all comes together with a spot in the Super Six.
