NORMAN, Okla. —  The reigning Big 12 Champion Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team is ranked 10th in the preseason GymInfo Coaches Poll released Friday, the highest ranking of any conference squad.

The Sooners return 11 members from last season’s group that clinched OU’s first Big 12 title since 2004, after carding an undefeated regular season.  Oklahoma placed eighth at the 2008 NCAA Championships - tying a program best.

Oklahoma’s 525 points in the preseason poll were one less than ninth-ranked Oregon State.

“It’s always an honor to be recognized by your peers as a preseason top-10 squad,” said ‘08 Big 12 Coach of the Year K.J. Kindler.  “We also understand the body of work that goes into earning a lofty ranking and embrace the challenges of the upcoming season.”

Georgia, winner of the last four national titles, opens the 2009 season as the nation’s top team.  The Gym Dogs earned 26 of a possible 33 first-place votes, easily distancing themselves from No. 2 Utah (two first-place votes).  Florida, UCLA (four first-place votes) and Stanford round out the top five.

Nebraska (11th) and Missouri (19th) were the only other Big 12 squads ranked in the preseason poll.

The Sooners’ regular season schedule features events against eight teams ranked in the preseason top-25 poll and commences Jan. 9 in Gainesville, Fla., against No. 3 Florida, a Super Six squad from a year ago.
