NORMAN, Okla. – The 15th-ranked Oklahoma men’s tennis team opened the spring season with a 7-0 win over Wichita State inside the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion on Tuesday.
“It’s a good start to the year,” John Roddick said. “Wichita State had a really good No. 1 doubles team who advanced to the quarterfinals of the All-American and are ranked No. 20, so that was a good sign that we won that match fairly convincingly. Then we really took care of business at two and three and really throughout all of singles except the last match.”
In Roddick’s three years as head coach, the Sooners (1-0) have yet to give up a point to Wichita State (0-1) as Roddick improved to 3-0, with OU holding a 21-13 advantage all-time.
Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong, ranked No. 38, were the first to finish after earning a win at No. 2 doubles where the tandem took down Wichita State’s Tomislav Gregurovic and Erick Reyes, 8-2.
OU’s David Pultr and Guillermo Alcorta clinched the doubles point after the duo cruised past WSU’s Juan Estenssoro and Nestor Perez, 8-2.
The Sooners’ 14th-ranked tandem comprised of Costin Paval and Dane Webb finished off the doubles sweep after they beat the Shockers’ Matheus Pereira and David Cavalcanti, ranked No. 20, at the No. 1 position, 8-6.
In singles action, OU won all six positions, five of which were in straight sets, to run away with 7-0 victory.
OU’s fourth-ranked Paval was the first to conclude in singles action. The junior from Bucharest, Romania, downed the nation’s No. 68 player, Matheus Pereira, in identical set fashion, 6-1.
The Sooners took a 3-0 lead after Siributwong, ranked No. 38, earned a straight-set victory over WSU’s Erick Reyes, 6-1, 6-3.
At the No. 2 position, Alcorta (No. 53) took care of Cavalcanti, 6-4, 6-0, to carry on OU’s string of straight set wins.
Oklahoma freshman Dane Webb, ranked No. 63, earned his first win for the Sooner program after he beat the Shockers’ Kester Black, 6-2, 6-4.
In his first action since returning to Oklahoma, David Pultr captured a win at the No. 5 spot over WSU’s Juan Estenssoro, 6-4, 6-3.
Tsvetan Mihov, ranked No. 39, battled back after dropping the first set, 6-4, to WSU’s Tomislav Gregurovic to take the final two sets, 6-4, 7-6(3).
“We have a lot of good things to take from this match and overall it was a pretty disciplined effort,” Roddick explained. “I think Wichita State played well and they are going to do well in their conference.”
Next up, the Sooners will take on No. 23 Ole Miss at the ITA Kickoff Weekend on University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sunday, Jan. 29.
