NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma head track and field coach Martin Smith announced the signing of 19 student-athletes on Thursday. The six men and seven women complete the 2011 class of newcomers. The class encompasses seven states: Oklahoma, Texas, California, West Virginia, Florida, Missouri and Wisconsin.
Alexandra Morgan (Ventura, Calif.) was Inducted into the Ventura County Hall of Fame in 2011 for her efforts in both discus and shot put at Ventura High School. Morgan owns five league titles and was the 2011 California discus state champion. Alisa Jenkins will compete in multis.
Brooke Garner (Tulsa, Okla.) holds records from Edison High School in both shot put and discus and was named a Nike Junior Olympic All-American and the Tulsa World’s Female Track Athlete of the Year. Garner was also the 5A state champion in both shot put and discus her senior year.
Katie Adair (Graham, Texas) was a regional champion in 2010 and 2011, while finishing third in state competing in pole vault. Kate Foster (Mesquite, Texas) was a four-time district champion in the shot put and was named to the all-state track team and the all-state academic team in 2011.
Sarah Tolson (Pawhuska, Okla.) was the 2011 state champion in both discus and shot put, which she was a three-time state champion in the discus. Whitney Johnson (Houston, Texas) is a transfer from LSU, where she had personal records of 19-02.00 in the long jump and 39-00.00 in the triple jump. Transfer Regan Tindell (Belton, Texas) will run distance for the Sooners.
On the men’s side, Austin Perry (Duncan, Okla.) was a state champion in both shot put and discus and he holds a 5A state meet record in the shot put (67-8.00). Caleb Gagliardi (Fresno, Calif.), a transfer from Fresno State, finished eighth at the Western Athletic Conference meet in 2011 .
Christian Johnson (Ada, Okla.) was a three-time regional champion at Ada High School. He qualified for state all four years he was at Ada and he placed at the Meet-of-Champions twice.
Eric Cray (San Antonio, Texas) transferred to OU from Bethune-Cookman. He was a three-time participant in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA East Regional and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that competed at the 2009 NCAA Championships.
Local product Ethan Baker captured state championships in the 400-meter run and 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays as a senior. Baker won his first state title in the 400-meter as a junior, his first-ever year of running track.
Seth Lewandowski (Tulsa, Okla.)rounds out the new signing class. He competed at Lincoln Christian School, which he placed third in the OSSAA Class 2A shot put.
Distance runners Brandon Doughty (Charles Town, W.V.), Josh Gracia (Boynton Beach, Fla.), Daniel Mazar (Fenton, Mo.), Dayton McVicker (Fairmont, W.V.) and Dan Schubert (Appleton, Wis.) also join the team as distance runners.
