NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma junior guard Steven Pledger was named Phillips 66 Co-Big 12 Player of the Week today after his performance in the Sooners' 79-74 All-College Classic win over Houston on Saturday in Oklahoma City.
Pledger, who shared the award with Baylor's Perry Jones III, scored 31 points (his most ever in regulation) against the Cougars and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. He was 10-for-13 from the field, 4-for-5 from 3-point range and 7-for-7 from the free throw line while adding two steals and committing just one turnover in 37 minutes to earn game MVP honors.
The performance upped Pledger's season scoring and rebounding averages to 19.5 and 4.3, respectively. He ranks No. 1 nationally among guards with his .604 field goal percentage. Among Big 12 players, he ranks No. 2 in scoring, No. 3 in 3-point field goal percentage (.512), No. 4 in field goal percentage, No. 5 in 3-pointers (2.6) and steals (1.6) per game, and No. 6 in free throw percentage (.833).
To put Pledger's .604 season field goal percentage in perspective, the highest percentage by an OU guard over the course of the last 11 seasons was .473 by Willie Warren in 2008-09.
The 6-4, 222-pound Chesapeake, Va., product has been exceptionally hot during OU's four-game winning streak, averaging 21.3 points on .707 field goal, .667 3-point (10-for-15) and .895 free throw (17-for-19) shooting.
Pledger has scored in double figures in each of his eight contests and has shot .500 or better in seven games. He has already scored at least 20 points four times after doing it three times all of last season in 32 outings.
Jones III, a sophomore forward, averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in wins over Bethune-Cookman and BYU.
Texas' Jaylen Bond was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week.
