NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma suffered its second shutout loss of the season, 4-0, to No. 10-ranked Santa Clara at Maloney Field in the Stanford Nike Invitational on Sunday.

The defending national champion Broncos improve to 4-2-1 on the season while the Sooners fall to 6-2.

"Obviously, I was disappointed in the score," said head coach Randy Evans. "But I have more confidence in our team after this weekend than I did before. I was very pleased with how competitive the game was. We had some great opportunities to score."

Santa Clara took the lead in the 25th minute when Leslie Osborne scored after beating OU goalkeeper Catherine Wade (Midland, Texas) from 10 yards away.

Oklahoma's most threatening attack occurred just six minutes later, when a Bronco foul outside the box set up a free kick for Krissy Dawson (Peoria, Ariz.). Her shot went well high of the crossbar to end OU's chance at a score.

The Sooners finished the first period down by a 1-0 score.

In the second half, Santa Clara reserve Kristi Candau went on to score two goals to secure the Bronco victory.

Oklahoma did have two scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the contest, with two free kicks just outside the box. Dawson took both shots for the Sooners, with her first bouncing off the right post and her second being saved by Bronco goalkeeper Erin Sharpe.

The Sooners finished with seven shots with three on goal while Santa Clara had 17 shots with nine on goal for the game. GK Catherine Wade played 81:55 and had four goals allowed and four saves. Jana Cunningham (Tulsa, Okla.) finished the match with 8:05 in the box and contributed one save.

The Broncos had a big lead in corner kicks, eight to one, and compiled 14 fouls to five for the Sooners.

"We learned that you can't get away with making mistakes at this level," said Evans. "It was great for us to experience the speed displayed by some of the top teams in the country. This will really help us now that we are set to begin Big 12 play. Again, we can take a lot of confidence away from our performance this weekend."

Oklahoma returns to Norman to open conference play against Baylor at John Crain Field on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Contact the OU ticket office at (800) 456-GoOU for season ticket information.
