TEMPE, Ariz. — Competing in cold and windy conditions that hampered performances on the track, Oklahoma athletes still managed to win five individual event titles Saturday night at the Sun Angel Track Classic. The Tempe, Ariz., meet saw Sarah Pappas (pole vault), Eric Bailey (400-meter hurdles), Shawna Anderson (100-meter dash), Jasmine Simmons (triple jump) and Brittany Borman (javelin) all claim titles on the day.
One week after setting a PR in her season-opening classic, Pappas did it again en route to winning the the women’s pole vault. Pappas cleared the bar at 13-1.75 (4.01), a quarter inch higher than her mark last week, on her first attempt at the height. The clearance is the second best in Oklahoma history behind the program record of 13-3.50 (4.05). Pappas was one of two Sooners in the top three as Alexandra Acker finished third in the event with a height of 12-10.00 (3.91). Pappas’ win is the first of the season by the senior and the second by a vaulter after Acker won the event at the North Texas Classic.
The defending Sun Angel champion in the 400-meter hurdles, Bailey ran away with the crown for the second straight year with a time of 50.87 in the event. Saturday’s race was the first of the season for Bailey in the event who was less than a second off his personal best of 50.17, which is the fifth-fastest in Oklahoma history.
A day after setting leaping a personal best in the long jump at the Mesa Classic, Simmons returned to the jumps runway for the triple jump at the Sun Angel and responded with a jump of 40-0.25 (12.25) to win the event. Despite jumping into a headwind, Simmons still improved her season mark by a quarter inch.
The 2010 NCAA runner up in the javelin, Borman competed in the event for the first time of the 2011 season on Saturday and responded with a win, throwing the implement a distance of 170-0 (51.81). The title was Borman’s second in as many weeks after winning the discus crown at last week’s Texas Tech Open. The nation’s No. 2 athlete in the event, Borman defeated four other ranked opponents in the event on Saturday.
Anderson claimed her second 100-meter dash title of the season after winning the event at her season-opening North Texas Classic. Anderson’s time of 11.83 into a headwind of 1.6 meters-per-second earned the junior the win on Saturday.
