NORMAN, Okla.-- The Oklahoma women’s golf team tees off in its second spring tournament Feb. 20-21 (Monday-Tuesday) at the Central District Invitational at the 6,099-yard, par-72 River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla. The 54-hole event is hosted by Michigan State University and will be the first tournament this spring for the Sooners to play two rounds in one day.
OU, No. 28 in the Golfweek rankings, is coming off of a 13th-place finish at the Northrop Grumman Challenge in California last week. All 15 teams were ranked in the top 50 nationally, including three in the top 10.
“We’re excited to be back out this week,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “The girls haven’t been here before but I played in this event when I was in college. It’s a fun tournament, as we stay with host families. We’re looking forward to having a good week.”
Fourteen teams will join the Sooners in the competitive field, including three teams ranked in the top 10 and seven other squads ranked in the top 50. The field includes: No. 5 Vanderbilt, No. 6 LSU, No. 7 North Carolina, No. 21 Ohio State, No. 26 Michigan State, No. 32 Iowa State, No. 35 Northwestern, No. 36 TCU, No. 42 Kent State, No. 48 Michigan, Central Florida, Coastal Carolina, Indiana and Minnesota.
The Sooners will be led by Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil, who is starting in the No. 1 position. The sophomore has finished in the top-10 two times this season and a total of eight times while playing for OU. She also boasts an individual title in the fall at the Golfweek Invitational.
Sophomore Anne-Catherine Tanguay, who also holds an individual title this season at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, will start at the No. 2 position for the Sooners. Golfweek currently ranks Tanguay at No. 46 in the individual women’s collegiate rankings.
Junior Taylor Schmidt will play at the No. 3 position and sophomores Emily Collins and Jade Staggs will start at the No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively.
The 54-hole Central District Invitational will include two rounds on Monday morning beginning at 7 CT with a shotgun start. The tournament’s final round will be played Tuesday. Live starts will be available at Golfstat.com.
