NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 Oklahoma women’s golf team won the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic for the fourth consecutive year after shooting a final-round 298 Tuesday to finish with a tournament total of 900. It also marked the fourth consecutive year that the Sooners have won the tournament by 19 or more strokes. OU outpaced second-place Southern Methodist by 20 strokes.
The tournament, hosted by OU, was played at the 6,013-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman. Four of the six Big 12 teams playing finished in the top five.
Senior Lisa Meldrum had a stellar tournament and won the individual title by six strokes after shooting an even-par 72 Tuesday to finish with a 215 (-1), the only total that was under par for the tournament. It marked familiar territory for Meldrum, who won the Susie Maxwell two years ago.
“This was a great victory,” Meldrum said. “I really needed to get my confidence back and I really wanted to help our team to a fourth straight victory. My goal was just to help our team win. It’s great to win this my senior year.”
Also competing was senior Hope Edge who finished in ninth place after carding a final-round 76 (+4) to finish with a tournament total of 228 (+12). Sophomore Amparo Gala and junior Emily Milberger, last year’s Susie Maxwell Champion, tied for 13th with a 230 (+14). Gala recorded a final-round 77 (+5) while Milberger shot her best round of the tournament, a one-over-par 73 Tuesday. Freshman Jaclyn Stelzer turned in a final-round 80 (+8) and finished tied for 37th with a 238 (+22).
Six Sooners also competed individually. Sophomore Cathryn Uselton earned the best finish of her career. Uselton tied for 33rd after recording a final-round 82 (+10) for a tournament total of 236 (+20), also a career best. Junior Jenni Nimmo and freshman Alana Donaldson each turned in tournament totals of 246 (+30) to finish tied for 54th. Freshman Charli Bullard, in her first collegiate action, tied for 68th with a 251 (+35) while sophomore Erin Goranson shot a 260 (+44) to finish in 81st place. Sophomore Marie Turner turned in a tournament total of 269 (+53) to finish tied for 84th.
The Susie Maxwell Berning Classic marked the end of regular season play for the Sooners. OU will begin postseason play at the Big 12 Championships April 23-25 in College Station, Texas.
