OU Places 30 on Academic All-Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Oklahoma Track and Field program placed 30 student-athletes on the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field Team the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. Four of the student-athletes, Eric Bailey (sociology), Scott Cooper (business), Alex Muntefering (health & exercise science) and Jacy Bennett (management) were named to the team with 4.0 GPAs.

Both the Oklahoma men and women were second in the Big 12 behind Nebraska with 14 first team selections each while two Sooners were named second-team Academic All-Big 12.

Rob Sorrell (aviation) was named Academic-All Big 12 First Team for the fourth consecutive year, one of 15 Sooners to earn a repeat honor by the Big 12 Conference. Cooper, Chris Sweeney (marketing) and Jessica Engel (health & exercise science) all earned their third such honors while 11 others earned their second honors.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, the track and field academic all-league squad consisted of 267 first team members combined with 48 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
