WACO, Texas – The 47th-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team fell short of an upset over No. 11 Baylor Friday as the Sooners lost to the Lady Bears, 4-3, in Waco, Texas.

Oklahoma (9-9, 4-2 Big 12) won the doubles point for the seventh straight match to take the early 1-0 lead.

“I am proud of how we competed tonight,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “We continued our winning streak in doubles but Baylor was just too tough in singles, especially at their top spots.”

OU’s Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie, ranked No. 46 in doubles nationally, upset Baylor’s 22nd-ranked duo of Nina Secerbegovic and Ema Burgic at the No. 1 spot, 8-6.

“If we can play like that on Sunday then we will give ourselves a chance of pulling off the upset,” Mullins said.

Nicole Long and Whitney Wofford defeated Baylor’s Jordaan Sanford and Nicole Kosakowski, 8-5, at the No. 3 doubles position to clinch the doubles point win for OU.

Baylor won the first four singles points to clinch the victory over the Sooners, but OU’s Wofford and Abbi Melrose won the final two matches to keep the dual close.

Wofford rallied to defeat Horter after losing the first set, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0, while Melrose topped Ema Burgic, 7-5, 4-1.

Next up, the Sooners face No. 22 Texas Tech Sunday, April 1 at 1 p.m., in Lubbock, Texas.
