NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma men’s tennis standout Marek Velicka is set to participate in the 2005 NCAA Individual Singles Championships in College Stations, Texas Wednesday. Velicka will face Kevin Anderson of Illinois at 10 a.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The sophomore has played at the No. 1 singles slot for OU every match this season. The 6-3 righthander has produced a two-year record of 46-18 (.720 winning percentage) and is currently 28-13 on the season.
Winner of the ITA Fall Region V Singles Championship, Velicka was named to the All-Big 12 singles team for the second consecutive year. The Prerov, Czech Republic native became the first singles competitor in the NCAA Tournament since Dusty Beard in 2000. Velicka also became the first Sooner in 2004 to receive singles and doubles all-conference honors since 1998 when Beard collected both. Current Sooner Ondrej Fukala was named to both the all-singles and all-doubles teams this season.
A year ago, Velicka and partner Lee Gregg won the league’s No. 3 doubles position crown with a 5-0 performance. The All-Big 12 Academic second teamer also has won over 70 percent of his matches as a Sooner (73.0).
