NORMAN,Okla. The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team finished the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis., Monday in a tie with Nebraska for third place with a total score of 934 (+70). In their first tournament of the season, the Sooners carded a 312 (+24) in the third round and finished 12 strokes behind first-place Indiana.

Junior Kelly Jacques turned in a final-round 77 (+5) and finished the event with a 229 (+13), good for a sixth-place tie. It was the fourth top-10 finish of her career. Jacques finished four strokes behind first-place Katie Elliott (Wisconsin) and Adrienne White (Louisville).

Sophomore Kendall Dye finished ninth with a three-round 232 (+15) after turning in a final-round 76 (+4).  Sophomore Staci Smoot shot an 80 (+8) Monday and tied for 15th while senior Megan Goodwin, who competed as an individual, carded a 79 (+7) to earn a tie for 36th. True freshman Joyce Trus finished 60th after carding an 86 (+14) in the final round.

“We went in hoping to win,” said OU head coach Ludvigson. “With a third-place finish, we saw some promising things. We beat some of the teams in our region that we needed to beat. Kendall played solid and consistent after sitting out for three months with an injury, which was very pleasing. Overall we saw some positive things and know the things we need to work on.”

Four other Big 12 teams competed in the 12-team field that played the 6,175-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course. Fellow league member Nebraska tied with the Sooners in third place. Iowa State finished seventh (943) and Kansas State eighth (946).

The Sooners will continue the fall season next week at the Jeannine McHaney Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept. 18.
