NORMAN, Okla. --The Sooner soccer team (10-6-2, 5-3-1 Big 12) is 6-2-1 in the last nine games and enters Friday’s regular season finale with No. 11 Oklahoma State (14-3-1, 7-2-0) in third place in the Big 12 standings. The Bedlam Series, presented by Oklahoma Farm Bureau, is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The Cowgirls are tied for first place in the conference despite dropping two games last weekend at Texas and Texas A&M. Last Friday’s loss at Texas snapped a 13-game unbeaten streak for the Cowgirls.

OU is coming off a 1-1 split weekend on the road which featured a pair of double overtime games at then-No. 6 Texas A&M (L, 2-1) and Texas (W, 2-1).

OSU returns 20 letterwinners and eight starters from the 2009 team that finished fifth in the Big 12 with a 5-5 mark. However, the Cowgirls finished the year ranked No. 13 after losing in the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 15-7-2 overall record.

Senior midfielder Annika Niemeier, junior defender Melinda Mercado and sophomore goalkeeper Adrianna Franch were all named to the 2010 All-Big 12 preseason team. Niemeier led OSU with 11 goals scored a year ago, while Franch led the Big 12 with 11 shutouts. In 2010, junior Krista Lopez leads the Cowgirls’ offense with 12 goals while Franch has posted seven shutouts.

On Oct. 8, 2010 against Francis Marion, senior Whitney Palmer tied OU’s career goals record with 34. Two days later at Kansas, Palmer turned in her second straight one goal and one assist performance to move into sole possession of OU’s career goals mark and tied the career lead in points with 75. Best Since 2005
With the win on Sunday over Texas, OU improved to 10-6-2 overall and 5-3-1 in Big 12 play. The Sooners last won 10 games overall and five games in Big 12 play in 2005 (OU finished 13-6-1 and 5-4-1 that season). Oklahoma has recorded double-digit wins in a season on five occasions and the five wins in conference play is tied for a program best.

Striking First
The Sooners are 9-2-1 when scoring the game’s initial goal this season. On the other side, OU is 1-4 when the opponent strikes first. OU has scored first in seven of the last nine games with a 6-2-1 record in that span, including its first victory when surrendering the game’s first goal (vs. Colorado). OU’s two losses when scoring first came at Texas A&M and at Missouri.

Offensive Explosion
Oklahoma started the season with 10 goals in the first nine contests, a 1.11 per game average. In the last nine games, OU has found the back of the net on 23 occasions, a 2.56 goals per game average. Included in that span, was the 8-0 victory over Francis Marion, which tied a program record for most goals scored in a game (won 8-0 over Alabama A&M in 2007 and won 8-1 over Drury in 1997).

Four Straight Overtime Games
Each of the last four games have been contested past regulation time, including three played in double overtime. The Sooners are 2-1-1 in that span with victories over Colorado and Texas. OU ‘s loss came at then-No. 6 Texas A&M.

OU has played in four straight overtime games on one other occasion in school history. In 2003, the Sooners battled Iowa State (T, 2-2), Missouri (W, 2-1), Nebraska (L, 2-1) and Colorado (T, 0-0). Three of those games also reached the second overtime session.

More Overtime
OU was without a win in the last 15 overtime games before the 2-1 victory over Colorado in extra time on Oct. 17. The Sooners’ last overtime win was also against Colorado on Oct. 2, 2005 in Norman (OU won 2-1).

One-Goal Games
Fourteen of the 18 games in 2010 have been decided by one goal or less with OU holding a 8-4-2 record. The Sooners have already surpassed the win total from a year ago in those decisive games and lead the Big 12 in wins in that category. Oklahoma was 2-4-2 in games played in 2009 decided by one goal or less and 3-5-1 in head coach Nicole Nelson’s first season in 2008.
