NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma soccer is 4-0 and off to the best start in
the program's history. Now, the Sooners are ready to start playing at home.
The 2002 Sooners open at John Crain Field against an old nemesis in SMU on Friday,
Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
OU recorded two shutouts this past weekend with 3-0 road wins over Drury and Arkansas.
With wins over TU and ORU to begin the season, the Sooners have outscored their
opponents by a combined 10-1 margin and recorded 76 shots while allowing only
29.
Along with the strong start for the 2002 team, several individual Sooners are
nearing career record marks.
Preseason All-Big 12 forward Logan
Womack scored two goals at Drury on Sept. 6 and one more at Arkansas on Sept.
8. The junior now has 23 career goals and needs just four more to break the school's
all-time career goals mark of 26 set by Jonette Coquat over the 1998-2001 seasons.
With two assists, one each against Drury and Arkansas, senior forward Krissy
Dawson moved into a second-place tie with Heather Morrison on the career assists
chart with nine. Former Sooner Jonette Coquat leads in the category with 15 career
assists from 1998-2001.
Oklahoma can also break the record for the longest win streak in school history
with a victory over SMU. The current record is four games. The Sooners defeated
Alabama, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, TCU and Kansas in consecutive games during the 2000
season.
The Lady Mustangs hold a 3-0 series lead on the Sooners but all three wins have
been by one-goal margins. In their last meeting, SMU handed OU its first loss
of the 2001 season, 1-0, in Dallas on Sept. 9.
This year, SMU is 3-1 and coming off a 2-1 overtime win over Arizona State. Earlier
this season, SMU battled No. 5 Texas A&M into double overtime before losing 2-1.
The Aggies were the preseason pick to win the Big 12 by the league's coaches.
Gates open at John Crain Field at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with the game slated to
begin at 7:30. The night is designated Norman Youth Soccer League Night and the
first 250 fans receive a 2002 Oklahoma soccer autograph poster.
The Sooners will next play against Arizona at John Crain Field on Sunday, Sept.
15 at 1 p.m. Contact the OU ticket office at (800) 456-GoOU for season ticket
