NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma soccer freshman Whitney Palmer was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team, the conference office announced on Monday.
The forward is the third Sooner in school history to be selected to the squad following Lauren MacIver in 2002 and Logan Womack in 2000.
The Plano, Texas, native had a stellar season in 2007 and became the fourth freshman in school history to lead the team in goals (6) and the third to lead in points (13). Four of Palmer's six scores were game-deciding goals, a mark that was tied for third in the Big 12. Her six goals ranked tenth in the conference.
Only three other freshmen in OU history have scored more goals than Palmer's team-leading six this season (Logan Womack-7 in 2000, Jonette Coquat-7 in 1998 and Heather Morrison-8 in 1997). Palmer's 13 points is also the fourth-best total among OU freshmen behind Coquat (19), Morrison (18) and Womack (16).
The freshman's four game winners is the third best mark for a Sooner in a single season and also places her in a tie for fifth place on OU's career list in the same category. After scoring the decisive goal against William and Mary, Palmer was honored by the conference as the Big 12's Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 11.
Palmer is one of seven starters that will return for Oklahoma for the 2008 season.
