NORMAN, Okla. - The 18th-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team has been selected to compete in the NCAA Central Regional May 9-11 at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan. The Sooners will field the same team that clinched runner-up honors at the 2002 Big 12 Championships. Team members are seniors Wendy Martin and Jennifer Tannehill, junior Allison Johnson and sophmores Hope Edge and Lisa Meldrum.
The 54-hole tournament, which is hoted by Michigan State, will be formatted with 18 holes each day. The tournament field will consist of 21 teams including No. 10 Baylor, No. 20 Bradley, No. 14 Florida State, No. 15 Illinois, No. 12 Indiana, No. 18 Kansas State, No. 11 Kent State, No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 Michigan State, No. 16 Nebraska, No. 19 UNC Wilmington, No. 13 Northwestern, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 8 Oklahoma, No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Purdue, No. 21 St. Francis, No. 3 Texas, No.9 Texas Christian, No. 2 Tulsa and No. 17 Wisconsin. Individuals qualifying for the tournament were No. 1 Randi Gauthier, North Texas; No. 2 Elin Ohlsson, Missouri and No. 3 Alison Hiller, Southern Illinois.
Martin will be competing in her third consecutive regional tournament as will Tannehill who had her best conference finish this season by garnering 10th place. Johnson, who is ranked 46th as an individual, was honored as a second-team All-Big 12 selection after placing in the top 20 of every tournament this year. Edge's second regional appearance will come on the heels of four top 20 finishes and career low rounds and a career best finish. Meldrum, who is ranked 18th in the country and holds the team low scoring average, was named first-team All-Big 12.
