NORMAN, Okla. — Fresh off winning the NCAA Indoor Championship in the 200-meter dash, Oklahoma sprinter Mookie Salaam was added to The Bowerman Award watch list the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday morning. Given to the nation’s top track and field athlete by the USTFCCCA, Salaam is one of 10 men nationwide on the list.
Salaam won Oklahoma’s 33rd NCAA title Friday night in the 200-meter dash as he clocked a time of 20.41 in the event’s finals after running a world-leading 20.39 in the prelims for the race. The junior from Edmond, Okla., is undefeated this season in the event having claimed three wins including NCAA and Big 12 titles.
Salaam is also the 2011 Big 12 Champion in the 60-meter dash, having won every single race this year at the distance except for the finals at the NCAA Championships where he finished eighth after tweaking his left hamstring. Salaam ran sub-6.60 in the event five times this season.
The Bowerman Advisory Board appointed four of its members to comprise The Bowerman Men’s Watch Committee and another four of its members to make up The Bowerman Women’s Watch Committee. The committee will release their next men’s update on Wednesday, April 6. The three men and three women finalists will be named in late June.
