NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's and women's gymnastics teams defeated nationally ranked squads en route to a sweep in the home season-openers for both at Lloyd Noble Center. The women topped No. 16 Ohio State, 196.465 to 193.550, while the men defeated No. 7 Iowa and No. 17 Air Force with a team score of 216.750.

Senior Mariana Goncalves posted a meet- and career-high all-around score of 39.525 to lead the OU women. She finished first in both the vault and uneven bars (9.875 and 9.90 respectively) and second on the balance beam with a 9.875. Sophomore Kasie Tamayo finished second in the all-around with a 39.350. She placed first on the balance beam (9.875), second on the parallel bars and floor exercise (9.850 and 9.875, respectively) and fourth on the vault (9.750).

Numerous Sooners posted career highs in Sunday's meet. Goncalves (vault), Tamayo (floor), senior Alison Mayberry (beam), junior Christy Gerard (floor) and freshman Allison Landis (floor and bars)

"This was one of Oklahoma's finest performances this early in a season," said head women's coach Steve Nunno. "We're proud that we had no major mistakes and of course, there's room for improvement, but overall we are where we want to be. Mariana (Goncalves) had one of her best meets as a Sooner and she should be a force to be reckoned with this year. My hat is off to Ohio State, they also had a great meet."

The Sooner men are next in action on Jan. 25-26 at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo., while the women travel to Denton, Texas, on Jan. 26 for a meet with Texas Woman's University at 7 p.m.
