NORMAN, Okla. -- In front of a record crowd (1,173) at the OU Softball Complex in Norman, Okla., the ninth-ranked Oklahoma softball team defeated the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 7-2, Wednesday night. With the victory, the Sooners improved to 37-11and 10-2 in the Big 12 Conference. OSU fell to 16-21 and 2-7.
Ashli Barrett helped OU to a great start in the first inning as the sophomore catcher smashed a three-run homer over the right-centerfield fence off of OSUs Sara Knife Chief to give the Sooners a 3-0 lead. Barrett now has seven home runs on the season with 30 RBIs. After a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, the Oklahoma City native improved her batting average to .390 in the Big 12. OU posted another three runs in the second inning. Shortstop Lisa Carey hit an RBI single scoring Stephanie Clark from second base. Lynette Velazquez drove in two more runs in the inning for the Sooners with a single. LaKisha Washington and Carey scored on the base hit. The senior first baseman now has a Big 12-high 55 RBIs on the year.
OU added another run in the fourth on a Carey sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Christy Ring from third, who reached base with a lead-off triple.
The Sooners starting pitcher, Jennifer Stewart, held OSU scoreless through five innings. But in the top of the sixth, the Cowgirls scored two runs off of the freshman ace. OSUs Jennifer Olival scored from third on a passed ball and Liz Silva drove in Jaime Foutch with a single.
Stewart improved to 19-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big 12. The Yukon, Okla., product allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. She struck out four and walked two. Knife Chief fell to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
These two teams will play the second game of the series Friday, April 30, in Stillwater, Okla. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
OU returns to conference play this weekend for its last regular season homestand of the year. The Sooners play Saturday against Texas Tech at noon and 2 p.m. On Sunday, which is Senior Day, OU faces Baylor at noon and 2 p.m.
