NORMAN, Okla. -- The OU men’s tennis team completed their first day of play at the sixth annual Baylor Intercollegiate Invitational in Waco, Texas. No. 46 ITA ranked senior, Marek Velicka, and freshman Ondrej Kacmar are representing Oklahoma in Waco.
Velicka, competing in the gold bracket, began singles play Friday morning where he faced Texas’ Rook Schellenberg. Velicka started off the match strong winning the first set 6-1 but fell behind to lose the next two sets 2-6, 2-6. The loss moved Velicka to the consolation bracket where he faced Denver’s Niklas Persson. Against Persson Velicka was eliminated by a forfeit.
In the green bracket, Kacmar making his collegiate debut faced Jon Greenberg of Rice. Kacmar defeated Greenberg by a score of 6-3, 6-2 to move to the round of 32 to face Jeorgie Perez of LCC. Against Perez, Kacmar dropped the first set 4-6, and then came back strong to take the final two sets of the match 6-4 and 6-3.
With the victory Kacmar remains undefeated in his collegiate career. Saturday he will face Mehdi Benhammou of Radford in the round of 16.
Velicka and Kacmar teamed up to compete in the gold doubles bracket, facing the Georgia Tech duo of David North and Eric Molnar. North and Molnar defeated the Sooner duo of Velicka and Kacmar. Scores from the match were not immediately available.
