NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma’s No. 3 doubles team of Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) becomes the first OU doubles team to capture a Big 12 Conference Position Title. The tennis duo produced a flawless 5-0 record at the No. 3 slot in league action.
Not since the 1994 season has an OU doubles team won a conference title. OU’s top doubles team of Brett Zeuschner and Glenn Kellet as well as Bradley Plokhooy and Nigel Birkett at No. 3 doubles earned the honors in 1994. Three Sooners picked up individual singles position titles the following year (1995); Nigel Birkett, Gene Highfield and Ryan Rainwater at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
Gregg and Velicka will be in action on Friday, April 30, as fifth seed Oklahoma (17-6, 3-4 Big 12) will host fourth seed and arch rival Oklahoma State (16-4, 4-3 Big 12) in the first round of Big 12 Tournament at 6 p.m. in Norman. The Sooners are on a two-match winning streak and have won seven of eight home matches this season.
