NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team shot a 296 in the third round to finish in third place at the 2002 Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club (Par-70, 6598 yards) in Hutchinson, Kan. The Sooners finished out the tournament with a total of 853 (+13), only three shots behind team champion Texas.

Junior John Kidwell (Dallas, Texas) barely missed claiming the first individual title of his collegiate career as he finished in second place overall. Kidwell shot even-par in the final round and finished the tournament with a total of 203 (-7) to tie for first with Oklahoma State's Anders Hultman. Hultman won the first hole on the ensuing playoff to win the individual championship.

It was Kidwell's best finish of his OU career and his second top-five finish of this season. His performance marked the best finish for a Sooner at the Big 12 Championship since 1998 when Hunter Haas took home the individual title.

"John Kidwell hung in there and played well for us today," said OU Head Coach Jim Ragan. "It was unfortunate that he didn't win the playoff but he played an outstanding tournament and he should be proud of what he accomplished."

OU senior Cody Freeman (Arnett, Okla.) was the second Sooner who finished in the top four as he tied for a season-best fourth with a final-round 75. Freeman finished the tournament with a total of 210 (E). It was his fourth time to finish in the top 10 this season.

Sophomore Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas) tied for 26th with total of 222 while junior Matt Cohn (La Jolla, Calif.) shot a third-round 74 to tie for 29th. Junior Parker Foster (Tulsa, Okla.) rounded out the scores for OU with a 77 to tie for 56th.

"I'm obviously disappointed with our play today," said Ragan, referring to losing a 10-stroke advantage after the second round. "We had a great opportunity to win but we didn't deserve to win with how we came out today. Nonetheless, I feel that overall this was a good tournament for our team and hopefully we can build on this in the coming weeks."

The Sooners continue play in Ardmore, Okla., on May 11-12 at The Maxwell . Tee times are scheduled for 8 a.m.
