TULSA, Okla. -- Andrei Daescu and Federico Chavarria saved their best tennis for the end of the fall slate in the finals of the 2007 ITA Central Regional Championships Sunday.
Daescu defeated Dalibar Pavic of Drake, 6-0, 6-4, claiming the ITA Central Regional Championship in singles play.
"This is a great day for the Sooners and it is very rewarding to see Andrei claim this title," OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. "I can't wait for him to get back on the court and continue playing solid tennis next weekend in Columbus."
On his way to the title, Daescu won five matches and defeated No. 1-seed and preseason's No. 15-ranked player Ivan Puchkarev of Oklahoma State.
The doubles team of Federico Chavarria and Daescu claimed the doubles title as the two defeated No. 1 seed and preseason No. 12 Colin Mascall and Blake Strode of Arkansas, 8-6.
"I am incredibly proud of our players for how they competed this weekend and it has paid off," Lockwood continued.
With his victory Saturday in singles play, Daescu automatically qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championships. Chavarria and Daescu qualified as a doubles team for the Indoor Championships with their win Sunday.
"We have been playing great tennis, but we can't be satisfied because the competition only gets tougher from here," Lockwood continued. "We will enjoy these two titles and get back to work Monday to prepare for Columbus."
Up next for Chavarria and Daescu are the 2007 ITA National Indoor Championships held in Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 1-4. The championships will be held at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
The Sooners are nearing the end of the fall schedule with one competition remaining following the ITA National Indoor Championships. Oklahoma will compete in the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 2-4.
