NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men’s and women’s track and field teams moved up in the latest rankings released today by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Sooner men jumped 10 spots to No. 13, while OU’s women jumped two spots to No. 19.
The 13th-ranked men’s team is the third-highest ranked Big 12 team, just behind No. 5 Texas and No. 9 Texas A&M. OU has five runners ranked in the top 10 of their respective events, including newcomer Patrick Casey’s top ranking the mile and No. 2 ranking in the 800-meter run. Another newcomer, Riley Masters, is also ranked in the top 10, coming in at No. 6 in the mile and No. 8 in the 3,000-meter run.
Defending Big 12 5,000-meter champion Kevin Schwab is currently ranked fifth in the event. Of the current season data used to compile a portion of the rankings, senior Malcolm Anderson ranks 20th in the 60-meter hurdles.
The 19th-ranked women’s team is the fifth Big 12 team ranked in the top 20, following No. 5 Texas, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 11 Texas A&M and No. 16 Baylor. Tia Brooks, who threw 60 feet, eight inches on Saturday, is the top-ranked athlete in the shot put, while teammate Karen Shump ranks second in the event. Shawna Anderson is 17th in the 60-meter dash and Jessica Engel comes in at No. 26 in the 5,000-meter run.
