NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooners rebounded after dropping game one of the series against Northwestern State on Friday with a convincing win, 15-8, over the Demons on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Six Sooners recorded multiple hits in the game as the team scored 15 runs on 15 hits. Over the last five games, the OU offense has been more than impressive, averaging 16 hits and just over 15 runs a game.
In his fourth start of the season, left-hander Garrett Patterson scattered five runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks while striking out eight opposing batters in 5.1 innings pitched.
Patterson improved to 3-1 on the season and was relieved by junior John Brownell who nailed down his first save of the season with 3.2 solid innings of relief. Brownell allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three to close out the ball game.
The Demons’ Daniel Lonsberry, who started the game, took the loss and fell to 2-2 on the year. OU recorded nine base knocks off of Lonsberry and included within that barrage of hits was seven runs (five earned).
Kody Kaiser and Kevin Smith hit solo homers in the game while Ryan Rohlinger (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Freddy Rodriguez (2-for-5, RBI) extended their respective hitting streaks to nine games.
On Friday against the Demons, the Sooners jumped out to an early lead but lost that and two other leads throughout the ball game. Saturday started off the same way but with more positive results. OU scored a single run in the bottom of the initial frame after Chuckie Caufield led off the game with a triple to right center and later crossed the plate on a single by Russell Raley.
But Northwestern State countered in the fourth inning with four runs on three hits and two errors and OU once again was forced to battle from behind. The fifth inning proved to be the difference for OU as six runs would cross the plate as the Sooners batted around the lineup. Eric Thornton doubled in a run and Rohlinger tripled in another as the Sooners took the lead, 7-4 for good.
Home runs by Kaiser in the sixth and Smith in the seventh provided extra insurance before OU exploded for another six-run inning in the eighth frame.
Caufield, Raley, Thornton, Rohlinger, Rodriguez and Smith each recorded two hits in the ball game.
With the win, OU improves to 11-5 and Northwestern State falls to 15-6. In the midst of a six-game home stand, the Sooners are 3-1 and will conclude the series against Northwestern State with the final and deciding game on Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KOKC 1520 AM with Chuck Kelly on the play-by-play. Sunday’s probable starters are Brad Burns (OU) and Kyle Broughton (NWLA).
The final game of the home stand will take place on Tuesday, March 15 at 3 p.m. against Dallas Baptist and OU will then travel to Tempe, Ariz., to take on Arizona State for three games.
