NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot a first-round 306 (+18) in the Big 12 Championship Friday, turning in a 306 (+18) on its home course.  The Sooners, who experienced an up-and-down round, stand in ninth place at the 6,327-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club and are just four shots out of fourth place.
Oklahoma State (293) lead the 12-team competition and is six strokes ahead of second-place Texas Tech (299).  Iowa State (300) stands in third, while Colorado and Texas are tied for fourth (302).  OSU's Victoria Park and Caroline Hedwall share the individual lead at 2-under (70).
Ellen Mueller led the Sooners on day one with her first-round 75 (+3).  Mueller recorded three birdies on the day (holes 3, 11 and 18) and is tied for 13th place.
"Starting out, because it's a championship, I had a few nerves," Mueller said.  "It took a little while to focus on playing a course that I know how to play like the back of my hand.  I didn't make as many birdies on the first few holes as I'm used to.  So I didn't do anything great, but I didn't do anything bad.  I finished with a birdie on 18, so I'll remember that for tomorrow and go in feeling good."

One stroke behind Mueller is freshman Taylor Schmidt at 76 (+4).  Schmidt also recorded three birdies (holes 1, 6 and 10) and heads into round two tied for 21st place.
Senior Chelsey Collins, who also inked a trio of birdies (holes 4, 12 and 15), turned in a 77 (+5) and shares 28th place.  Collins stood at 1-over after 15 holes, but double-bogeys on 16 and 17 dropped her on the leaderboard.  Fellow senior Andrea Sellmeyer, who carded back-to-back birdies (holes 11 and 12), shares 35th place with a 78 (+6), while sophomore Brooke Collins is tied for 58th with an 83 (+11).
"We struggled a little bit when we started," OU head coach Veronique Drouin said of the Sooners' first round.  "Then we made the turn and played 10, 11 and 12 really well.  We went from 11th place to second because we made a lot of birdies, and it was great to see that.  I think the girls were a little nervous at the beginning, but started to settle down and had some nice pick-ups at the end.  It's not a sprint, it's a marathon, so we have plenty of rounds left."
Saturday's second round will see Brooke Collins lead off for OU at hole No. 10 at 8 a.m. CT.  She will be followed by Sellmeyer at 8:10, Chelsey Collins at 8:20, Schmidt at 8:30 and Mueller at 8:40.  Sunday's third and final round will also start at 8 a.m.  Big 12 Championship live scoring is available at
