NORMAN, Okla. - Jonette Coquat scored a goal in overtime to give the University of Oklahoma womens soccer team a 1-0 victory over Iowa State this afternoon in front of 209 fans at the Norman North High School Soccer Complex. OUs first shutout of the season broke the teams five-game losing streak.
The Sooners were victorious despite being outshot, 28-12. Iowa State also recorded eight corner kicks to Oklahomas two.
Everything weve been working on this season culminated in our last possession, said OU Head Coach Randy Evans. We were patient and made the extra pass and scored the game-winner. Ive been raving about this teams attitude and work rate all season and it was evidenced at the end of todays game. Im so proud of this team. Our defense has been tremendous all year and it was again today.
Coquat, who was credited with seven of OUs 11 shots, scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 98:11 mark. She was assisted by Megan Olsen and Melanie Brosnahan on the sequence.
Goalkeeper Ayn Toppin, who entered the game at halftime, made seven saves and earned the victory while Jana Cunningham made three stops in the first half for OU. Hayley Mercer made two saves in net for Iowa State and took the loss.
Todays game was the last at home for seniors Natalie Hixson and Ashlee Richmond.
Oklahoma, which improved to 3-13-1 overall, finished its Big 12 season with a 2-8 mark. The Sooners conclude their season Sunday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m. at Arkansas. Iowa State fell to 11-6 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12 with its defeat today.
