Sooner Wrestling Team Goes 2-1 at Lone Star Duals

ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team beat Harvard and Navy, but lost to No. 15 Cornell at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas, today. The Sooners defeated Harvard, 36-6, and Navy, 27-6. Sooner Teyon Ware scored pins in the first two duals of the day. Ware, a true freshman wrestling at 141 pounds, joins senior All-American Witt Durden (133 pounds) as the only undefeated Sooners. Ware currently holds a record of 4-0, while Durden extended his record to 10-0.

"This was a bittersweet experience for us, due to the fact that we lost with three starters out," said head coach Jack Spates. "We realize that we are vulnerable, but we battled back and saw some good things. Kudos to Teyon Ware who wrestled with tremendous intensity and dominated every opponent. Witt Durden was also very impressive. While this wasn't what we wanted, there is a lot for us to build on."

The Sooners defeated Harvard in the team's first match of the day, 36-6. Oklahoma recorded two pins, a technical fall and an injury forfeit to win by a score of 36-6. Senior All-American Witt Durden scored a technical fall at 133 pounds over Harvard's Max Meltzer, 19-2. Ware, competing in only his second collegiate match, recorded a fall over Mike Baria of Harvard at 6:48 in the 141-pound match. Top-ranked Josh Lambrecht scored the Sooner's other pin, which came at 3:31 over Harvard's P.J. Jones.

Oklahoma dropped the second dual of the day to Cornell, after losing six mathces, by a score of 21-15. Ware recorded his second fall of the day against Byron Warner at 6:44 to give the Sooners their first lead of the dual, 9-3. Oklahoma lost the 149 and 157 pound matches before sophomore Wes Roberts decisioned J.T. Hagan of Cornell, 4-2. Senior Robbie Waller defeated Tyler Baier by a score of 4-3 for the last victory by a Sooner of the dual.

OU junior Daniel Carruthers, who competed in his first dual this season, scored a major decision victory over Navy's Matt Gulosh, 10-1. Ware continued to dominate his competitors, this time he recorded a major decision over Navy's Nate Gulosh, 16-5. Oklahoma received decision scores from Nate Parker (149 pounds) and Rafael Maturino (157 pounds) before Wes Roberts fell by a score of 11-8 to Navy's Frank Edwards. Robbie Waller scored the final bonus points for the Sooners with a major decision win over Mike Barikign.

Oklahoma will next travel to Tempe, Ariz., to take on Arizona State on Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.
