NORMAN, Okla. - recently caught up with junior Sergey Avdeyev of the men's tennis team to see how school is going and to find out what he is doing to prepare himself for the spring tennis schedule.

Avdeyev is a native of Moscow, Russia, and is one of two juniors on this year's squad.

The junior took home the first place flight championship in No. 1 singles at the Navy Invitational to begin the 2007 fall season.  Avdeyev went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in Annapolis.  He also won the No. 3 doubles flight championships to begin the fall.

Daescu talks about the music rotation on his iPod, his favorite thing about Norman and what other sports he enjoys besides tennis:

SS:  What did you do during the summer to sharpen your game?
SA:  I went to a tennis academy to sharpen my game and focus on things that I struggled with last season.  By the end of the summer, and when I returned to Norman, I could tell a difference in my game and the academy helped me tremendously.

SS:  What are you doing with any of your free time now that you are back in school?
SA:  I am very busy with school and I try to get as much studying in as possible.  Along with practice, I stay extremely busy and school is the most important thing.  So I try to keep up with my studies.
SS:  What personal goals do you have between now and the first official practice of the season?
SA:  I want to get in better shape.  The better shape I am in, the more endurance I will have as the season goes on.  And one of the most important things as a tennis player is to be in the best shape possible.
SS:  What kind of workouts do you do to keep yourself in tennis shape?
SA:  I try to do as many cardio exercises as possible because of its importance.  But I also do other workouts with weights.
SS:  How has the first half of the semester gone for you?
SA:  Class has been challenging and fun.  It keeps me busy, but that is a positive thing.  I have also met a lot of new people.  That is something I enjoy, meeting new people and making new friends.
SS:  What kind of music do you listen to?
SA:  It depends on my mood.  I really enjoy all kinds of music but it just depends on what I feel like that particular day.
SS:  What artists are in heavy rotation on your iPod?
SA:  I have a lot of different artists playing right now, but if I had to narrow it down I would say P. Diddy and Timbaland.
SS:  Who is the biggest tennis celebrity you have met?
SA:  Marat Safin.
SS:  If you weren't playing tennis, what would you play?
SA:  I would definitely be playing soccer because in my opinion it's the best sport in the world.  I am a huge soccer fan.
SS:  Do you watch any other sports?
SA:  I obviously love to watch soccer but I also really enjoy basketball.
SS:  What TV shows do you watch regularly?
SA:  I am not a fan of watching TV so I really don't watch it at all.  I would rather have my nose buried in a book studying.
SS:  Why did you choose OU?
SA:  Because the tradition is so rich and long standing.  And the academics are outstanding.
SS:  What is your favorite thing about Norman?
SA:  Norman is such a peaceful quiet town.  The thing I like most about it is that it is a small town, but it has all of the amenities and things you would find in a big city.
