TULSA The University of Oklahoma baseball team (37-14, 15-7 Big 12) dropped its sixth straight contest against Oklahoma State (34-14, 13-9 Big 12) at Drillers Stadium, losing 4-2.
The Sooners have not defeated the Cowboys in the first game of the Bedlam Series Presented by the Bank of Oklahoma and Your Oklahoma Ford Dealers, which saw a series-stadium record crowd of 11,262, since 2000.
Sooner ace Daniel McCutchen (6-7) came away with the loss, but it was due more to failed run support than his presence at the mound.
McCutchen allowed just two earned runs, walked one, and struck out 10 of his 30 batters faced in seven full innings of work.
McCutchen effort was matched by Cowboys’ hurler Matt Gardner (5-3), who gave up only five hits, shutting out the sooners for 7 2/3 innings.
OSU opened the scoring in the third inning as shortstop Jordy Mercer blasted his fourth home run of the season with a solo shot over the left center wall.
Third baseman Tyler Mach plated Corey Brown with a double four at-bats later.
The Pokes added two more runs in the seventh when Brown homered.
Oklahoma positioned itself for a rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs as pinch hitter Aaron Reza doubled to score Jackson Williams and Chuckie Caufield scored Reza with a sacrifice fly.
The Sooners face the Cowboys in game two of the Bedlam Series Saturday, May 13, at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
