Sooners Cruise Past Gents

NORMAN, Okla. -- For the sixth time this season, the No. 23 Sooner offense posted double-digit runs en route to a 17-6 win over Centenary on Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.  OU has won five straight games and improved to 14-4 overall with the win, while Centenary fell to 7-9. 

The Sooners pounded out 16 hits opposite the Gents’ six and scored a season-high 17 runs.

OU jumped on the board early with one run in the first and padded the lead with a five-run second inning.  The Sooners put the game completely out of reach with an eight-run seventh frame.

Kevin Smith (2-for-4) had three RBI in the eighth inning off a towering home run to right field and led all Sooners with a season-high four RBI.  Ryan Mottern (2-for-2) drove in three runs and Jon Shackelford came off the bench to tie a career-high with two RBI.

Daniel McCutchen improved to 4-2 with 6 1/3 innings tossed.  The Norman, native struck out nine batters and gave up three earned runs off five hits and three walks.  McCutchen, the reigning Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week, has struck out 25 batters in his last three starts.

Centenary’s Brandon Fulenchek dropped to 2-4 with just an 1 1/3 innings of action, which saw the Sooners cross the plate five times on his watch.  Only one of the runs with Fulenchek on the mound were earned as the lefty surrendered six hits.

Offensively, Robbie Knowles led the Gents’ offense with two hits, while four other batters each collected a base knock.

The three-game series continues on Saturday at 3 p.m. and OU’s Steven Guerra (5-0) is expected to throw opposite Will Kaage (2-1, 1.35 ERA). The first 100 fans will receive a free t-shirt and the game can be heard live on KOKC (1520 AM) until the pregame show begins at 5:45 p.m. for the OU women's basketball game.  Sunday’s series finale is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
