NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team began the 2002 Big 12 Championships with a bang by placing second after one round at the Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. The Sooners fired a score of 306 to put them in a tie for second place with Baylor. Leading the field is Oklahoma State with a five-over par 293.

Senior Jennifer Tannehill matched her season low round of 73 for third place, while sophomore Lisa Meldum shot a 76 for ninth place. Recording a first round score of 78 was junior Allison Johnson for 22nd place. Senior Wendy Martin turned in a score of 79 and is in 27th place, while sophomore Hope Edge is in 34th place with a score of 81.

"I'm really excited to be in the position that we are," said head coach Carol Ludvigson. "Jennifer Tannehill shot a very good round and she will look to continue that play tomorrow. We just need to continue to focus and utilize the position that we have put ourselves in."

Meldrum, a native of Quebec, Canada, was honored a a first-team All-Big 12 selection. Amarillo, Texas native, Johnson was selected to the All-Big 12 second team. All-Big 12 selections are nominated and then voted on by the the conference coaches.

The Sooners will play the second round tomorrow morning when they tee off hole one.
