NORMAN, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team begins the 2005 season against Big Ten powerhouse Northwestern on Friday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. The two teams will face each other inside the Combe Indoor Tennis Center in Chicago, Ill. Northwestern, who finished fourth in the Big Ten last season, returns eight letterwinners, while Oklahoma, who tied for fifth in the Big 12 Conference, welcomes back six players from a year ago.
The Sooners continue opening weekend action when they face DePaul on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m.
The men have a positive outlook for this season after completing a successful fall schedule. Head coach Paul Lockwood is in his 18th year at the helm of the program and has an experienced squad returning.
Leading the Sooners this season is sophomore Marek Velicka. Velicka returns to action after becoming the first Sooner in 13 years to capture the ITA individual singles title by upsetting four seeded opponents last fall.
The first home match for the Sooners is March 5 against Navy at 12 p.m.
