NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team opens its 2011 fall tournament season Friday as the Sooners host the second annual Sooner Fall Invitational, Sept. 16-18, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The tournament features 64 players from Oklahoma, Tulsa, Texas-Arlington, SMU, Arkansas-Little Rock, North Texas, Texas Tech, Armstrong Atlantic and Abilene Christian.
Four of the nine participating teams finished in the top 50 last season, while OU finished No. 24 after its second-straight NCAA tournament appearance.
OU returns four players from last year’s squad, including Marie-Pier Huet, Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie who all won an individual Big 12 Championship.
Lancaster and Ritchie won the No. 2 doubles title while Huet won the No. 4 singles championship.
Lancaster and Ritchie went 13-2 overall in doubles last season and were undefeated in Big 12 play.
The Sooners add two newcomers to the 2012 squad. Freshman Nicole Long joins the team, becoming the first ever blue chip recruit to play for the Sooners.
Also joining the team is sophomore transfer from Tennessee, Whitney Wofford. Wofford was a four-star recruit in high school and went 11-5 in singles and 6-5 in doubles last fall at Tennessee.
The Sooner Fall Invitational begins Friday at 9 a.m., with two rounds of doubles competition.
Admission to all home women’s tennis events is free.
