The Oklahoma men’s tennis team beat regional opponent Southwest Missouri State, 6-1, on Friday at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Sooners clinched the doubles point and won five of the six singles matches. OU improved to 11-1 while the Bears fell to 2-7 on the season.

“I’m proud of how we bounced back with our intensity to win this match,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “We are looking forward to the next two matches against William & Mary and George Mason. Our guys are excited to play opponents outside of our region.”

In singles play, Oklahoma overpowered the Bears and only gave up one match. Juniors Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic) and Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania), sophomores Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) plus freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) all posted straight-set victories for the Sooners.  The three newcomers of Fukala, Gregg and Velicka all remain undefeated after twelve matches. Fukala is 10-0, Gregg is 11-0 and Velicka is 12-0 on the season.

Sophomore Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) posted the only loss when he was upset in a tight three-set match against Southwest Missouri State’s Pavel Hanek at the No. 1 spot. Ivanov fell in the first set, 6-2, recovered with a 7-6 win in the second, and then lost the third game with a close 9-7 finish.

OU remained strong as they grabbed the doubles point. Fukala and Garrison flew by Southwest Missouri State’s Nenad Curcic and Filip Knezevic, 8-2. Tanasoiu and Velicka overcame Southwest Missouri State’s Rishi Garbharran and Predrag Pavlicic, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles, making the new duo 2-0 on the season.
