OKLAHOMA CITY – The 10th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team opened play in the 2009 Big 12 Championship Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Iowa State. The Sooners moved to 39-13 on the year and advance to Saturday night’s semifinal. Oklahoma faces Texas at 7:30 p.m. CT at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The Longhorns defeated Nebraska 10-3 on Saturday.
Big 12 Player of the Year Amber Flores put the Sooners on the board in the bottom of the first inning with her season-high 16th home run of the season. Flores’ shot to left field came with one out in the inning and was her 39th career blast.
Junior Lindsey Vandever lead off the second inning with a single to right center and moved to second on a wild pitch but was stranded to end the inning.
The Sooners added two runs in the third inning after sophomore Dani Dobbs was issued a leadoff walk. Dobbs moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Krystle Huey. Flores was then intentionally walked to put two runners on with one out. The walk tied Flores’ single season record of 45 set a season ago. Freshman Katie Norris then singled to right center to score Dobbs and Flores. Norris advanced to second on the throw home and moved to third when Vandever reached on a fielding error.
Both teams were held scoreless in the final four innings as the Sooners came away with the win.
Flores went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and one driven in. Norris was 1-for-3 with the two runs brought in.
Starter D.J. Mathis moved to 17-4 on the year, pitching four scoreless innings. Mathis allowed just two hits and no runs for the second straight game. She fanned five batters. Freshman Kirsten Allen pitched three innings in relief, picking up her third save of the year. Allen allowed three hits and struck out five.
