NORMAN, Okla.- Led by sophomore Will Kropp, the University of Oklahoma men's golf team shot an opening-round 10-under-par 274 Friday to share first place at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn. The 17-team field is competing at the 7,100-yard, par-71 Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course.
The Sooners are tied at the top of the leaderboard with Memphis, eight shots clear of third-place Mississippi.
"We really played well today and got the season off to a great start," said OU head coach Ryan Hybl. "We definitely left some out there, but I am proud of the boys for hanging in there and executing when the time was needed."
In his OU debut, Kropp, a transfer from the University of Georgia, shot 6-under 65 and leads the tournament by one stroke over Memphis' Jack Belote. Kropp recorded six birdies on the day and no bogeys. The Edmond, Okla., product birdied four of his first eight holes, then finished the day strong with birdies on holes 16 and 18.
"Kropp led us and played solidly all day long, but this is where he is supposed to be and I am excited for him," said Hybl.

Freshman Michael Schoolcraft and junior Riley Pumphrey had strong performances as well, each shooting a 2-under 69. Pumphrey birdied three holes with one bogey, while Schoolcraft birdied six holes and bogeyed four. The duo is tied for sixth place.
Senior Ryan Sirman (71) had a solid round and finished the day at even-par, good for a 16th-place tie. Fellow senior Liam Logan (74) finished at 3-over for the day and is tied for 48th.
While happy with his team's Friday performance, Hybl knows the tournament is far from over.
"We have a long ways to go before this weekend shakes out, but we put ourselves in contention and that is where our expectations are."
Logan will start the Sooners' second round Saturday with a 9:53 a.m. CT tee time.
