NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men’s and women’s track and field programs begin the 2012 indoor season ranked in the top 25, according to the preseason rankings released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday afternoon. The Oklahoma women open the year at No. 21, while the men follow at No. 23.

Oklahoma’s women rank fifth among Big 12 teams in the rankings with Texas leading the way at No. 4. Texas Tech (8), Texas A&M (17) and Baylor (18) all follow. The Sooners return two NCAA indoor first team All-Americans in 2011 Big 12 indoor shot put champion and NCAA runner-up Tia Brooks and Big 12 runner-up Karen Shump.

The men’s team is the fourth-ranked Big 12 team, following Texas (10), Kansas State (11) and Texas A&M (12). Returning for Oklahoma on the men’s side includes a pair of 5,000-meter runners in Kevin Schwab and George Alex. Schwab earned All-America honors in the event last season after winning the Big 12 indoor title in the event and finishing sixth at the national meet. Alex earned second team All-America honors in the event, as well.

Oklahoma hosts its first home meet of the 2012 season next Saturday, Jan. 21, with the J.D. Martin Invitational at the Mosier Indoor Facility.
