NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma setter Brianne Barker (Amarillo, Texas) has been selected to the 2011 United States Women’s National A2 program roster. Barker is one of 36 student-athletes with collegiate eligibility remaining selected to the program. The 2011 Women's National A2 Program features six setters, nine middle blockers, 10 outside hitters, five opposites and six liberos.
“Brianna has worked very hard for the past three years and all of her hard work and dedication has paid off,” said Oklahoma head coach Santiago Restrepo. “It’s an honor to be selected to the A2 team and represent the United States. The honor is well deserved and we’re extremely happy.”
Barker earned the spot after attending the Women’s National Team Open Tryout at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., last month. Barker was one of 204 athletes who participated in the three-day event.
The A2 team now travels to Dallas, Texas, for training and competition in the 2011 USA Volleyball open national championships from May 28-31. The 36 collegiate players will be split into three 12-member teams. Last year, two A2 teams competed in the open division, producing a gold and bronze medal.
Barker was named to the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America third team. She averaged 10.39 assists per set on the year, 2.67 digs per set and produced a .288 hitting percentage. Her 1,340 assists set an Oklahoma 25-point rally scoring record and ranks as the fifth highest single season total in program history. She recorded the first triple-double in Oklahoma program history and had 19 double-doubles this season.
She led the Sooners to the third round of the NCAA Championship earning a spot on the University Park, Pa. all-tournament team for her efforts in OU’s loss at No. 8 Penn State on Dec. 10. Barker recorded a triple-double with 10 kills, 57 assists and 14 digs against No. 22 in the second round of the Championship on Dec. 4.
