Sooners Sweep Cyclones

AMES, Iowa. - The 11th-ranked Oklahoma softball team swept a doubleheader over Iowa State University Sunday in Ames, Iowa. The Sooners won a tough first game of the doubleheader in 10 innings, 3-2. OU took the second game, 5-0. With the two victories, the Sooners improved to 33-10 and 6-1 in the Big 12 Conference. The Cyclones fell to 13-23 and 0-6.

In the top of the 10th of game one, catcher Ashli Barrett hit a game-winning single that scored LaKisha Washington from third base to give OU a 3-2 win. Washington was placed on second base at the beginning of the inning (international rule). She moved to third on Lisa Careys ground out to shortstop, then scored on Barretts hit.

With the score tied at 1-1, third baseman Mandy Fulton hit a double in the top of the eighth scoring Nicole Myers from second to give OU a 2-1 lead. Myers pinched ran for Lynette Velazquez, who got on base with a single. But the Cyclones tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning to keep the game alive.

The Sooners got on the board first in the top of the second. Right fielder Deborah Hargrave doubled to right centerfield scoring Mandy Fulton from second base. Fulton reached second with a single and a fielding error by ISUs right fielder Robyn Riedler.
The Cyclones tied the score at 1-1 in the third. Riedler lead off the inning with a double off of OUs starting pitcher Jennifer Stewart. The next ISU hitter Michelle Junod doubled knocking in Riedler.

The Cyclones threatened to take the lead in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, they had runners at first and second with no outs. But Stewart retired the next three Cyclone hitters to keep the score at 1-1. In the sixth, ISU had runners on first and second with no outs again. But Stewart got Lauren Cathey to fly out to left field and Cinnamon Gooding to ground out into an inning-ending double play.
Stewart earned her 16th victory of the season as she allowed 11 hits and two walks.

In game two, Fulton provided OU a 1-0 lead with an RBI double that knocked in Stephanie Clark who pinch ran for Velazquez after she reached base with a single.

With a two-run RBI double to left centerfield in the fifth, Velazquez extended the Sooners lead to 3-0. She raised her RBI total to 50 on the season. Pinch-hitting for Deborah Hargrave in the sixth, freshman Macey Wilson hit an RBI single scoring Fulton to push the OU lead to 4-0. Fulton reached second with a single and a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Myers.

In that same inning, with the bases loaded, Carey hit a single scoring Wilson from third to give the Sooners a 5-0 lead.

OUs Sophia Contreraz improved to 8-1 on the year. The senior shut out ISU on two hits in a complete game effort.

The Sooners are on the road again next weekend continuing Big 12 action. They travel to College Station, Texas, Saturday to play the 19th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies in a doubleheader. Games are slated for noon and 2 p.m. Next Sunday, OU will face the 15th-ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas. The games are also scheduled for noon and 2 p.m.
