NORMAN, Okla. – The 34th-ranked Sooners tennis team (11-8, 1-4 Big 12) dropped a close to match to No. 31 Oklahoma State, 4-3, on Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

“It was a tough loss for us but we fought our hearts out and put ourselves in a position to win,” OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. “It was a great college match tonight.”

OU began the dual sweeping the Cowboys in doubles competition. Junior Andrei Daescu and sophomore David Pultr, ranked No. 45 nationally, remain undefeated in Big 12 play as they defeated the 16th-ranked doubles team from OSU comprised of Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Nathan Byrnes, 8-2.

At the No. 3 position freshman George Chanturia teamed with junior Blake Boswell to take down the Cowboy’s Igor Sobolto and Oleksandr Nikitienko, 8-6. To close out the sweep senior Sergey Avdeyev and sophomore Ionut Beleleu combined to defeat OSU’s Mikhail Truckshanin and Anton Bobytski, 8-7.

In singles action the Cowboys went ahead 2-1 after winning matches at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions. At No. 1 Nedovyesov, ranked No. 1 nationally, defeated Daescu, No. 65 nationally, 6-2, 6-2, and Sobolto handled Boswell, 7-5, 6-3.

OU tied the match after Beleleu defeated the Cowboy’s Bobytski, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot.

OSU went ahead 3-2 after Bessonov defeated Sooner David Pultr, 7-6, 6-3. The match came down to the No. 2 and 5 positions, both of which went three sets.

After dropping his first set, 7-6, OU’s Avdeyev rallied to defeat OSU’s Byrnes, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 position.

The final match proved to be unfortunate for the Sooners, especially Chanturia. Chanturia won his first set 6-3, then dropped his second set 6-1 to OSU’s Trukshanin. In the middle of the final set Chanturia injured himself diving for a ball.

“It was a very unfortunate situation with Chanturia,” Lockwood said. “His injury late in the third set totally prevented him from competing at the level he had been the previous two and a half hours.”

In the end, Chanturia could not overcome the injury and lost the final set, 7-5.

“We just fell a little short but we will bounce back,” Lockwood said.

The Sooners return to action next Wednesday, April 15, when they host Wichita State for senior day. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
