NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team heads south of the Red River once again this weekend for the 12-team Texas A&M Aggie Invitational, April 15-16, at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.
The Aggie Invitational will be the Sooners’ final tune-up before the Big 12 Championships at Southern Hills, April 24-25.
Oklahoma comes into the tournament with three consecutive top-five finishes on its resume, including a fifth-place finish at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate (April 3-4) that saw three Sooners collect top-25 individual finishes.
The OU lineup for the Aggie Invitational will feature reigning Big 12 Player of the Year and Ben Hogan Award semifinalist Anthony Kim, seniors Justin Fraley, Brodie Flanders and Shawn LaFontaine, and sophomore Phillip Bryan.
In his first two events of the spring, the Ashworth Invitational and the Hall of Fame Invitational, Kim dominated, earning medalist honors at both events by a combined 15 shots. His eight-stroke margin of victory at the Hall of Fame was a tournament record and brought his career victories total to five.
Fraley recorded his best finish of the season at the Morris Williams, tying for 10th place overall, while Flanders’ 13th-place finish was a career best.
The Sooners’ solid spring has catapulted them up the rankings. After beginning the spring outside the top 50 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ratings, OU currently stands 39th. Jim Ragan’s squad is also receiving votes in the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll.
This weekend’s event could improve those standings if Oklahoma can turn in another solid performance against a field that includes 10 teams rated in the top 50, including No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Baylor and No. 10 Texas A&M.
At last year’s Aggie Invitational, the Sooners tied for fourth place, marking their best performance of the spring prior to a runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships. Anthony Kim fired rounds of 72, 69 and 69 to earn co-medalist honors with New Mexico’s Spencer Levin.
