NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team stays at home this week to face the University of Texas-Arlington. Sunday afternoon the Sooners will take on the Mavericks at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman at 12 p.m. Admission is free.
The Sooners own a 15-3 record and are 2-3 in Big 12 play. UTA enters the contest with an overall record of 9-8, but six of UTA’s eight losses have been by 4-3 decisions.
Last Time Against Texas-Arlington: The two programs met twice in the spring of 2004. The Sooners won both matches, only letting the Mavericks score two out of 11 points. Oklahoma owns a 5-3 series record against Texas-Arlington.
Tulsa and Nebraska Recaps
Oklahoma dominated 37th-ranked Tulsa beating the Golden Hurricane, 6-1, to continue regional play. The victory gave the Sooners their sixth regional win of the season, putting them at 6-0 verse Region V opponents.
In doubles, junior Tommy Garrison and senior Ondrej Fukala defeated TU’s Achim Roth and Aleksander
Charpantidis at the top slot, the Sooner pair now stand at 12-3. In singles action, the Golden Hurricane fought hard, but fell to the tenacity of the more experienced Sooner team. OU won five out of six singles matches. Garrison defeated Will Gray in a second-set rally, 6-3, 7-6 (6). Senior Silviu Tanasoiu clinched the match for Oklahoma by defeating Diego Camacho, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
The Sooners swept the Cornhuskers, 7-0. With the win OU improved to 2-3 in Big 12 play while NU dropped to 0-3 in conference play and 9-11 overall. The Sooners scored first by winning two of the three doubles positions, marking the first Big 12 match that the Sooners have won the doubles point. In singles, Garrison defeated Jose Rivera in a three-set thriller at the No. 3 slot. Rivera took the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second set, 1-6. In the third set, Garrison defeated Rivera, 6-4. At the No. 5 slot, Tanasoiu defeated Barthel in a close match, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
Sooner Hot Streak
With two more wins last week, junior Tommy Garrison has won 13 consecutive singles matches. He has defeated players from five ranked teams, including No. 1 Baylor, No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 27 Texas, and No. 37 Tulsa. Garrison is now 5-0 verse Big 12 opponents and 4-2 in regional action. Sophomore Marek Velicka is also on a roll winning four matches in a row and upsetting two top-ranked opponents. Velicka defeated 14th-ranked Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M and Texas’ 25th-ranked Callum Beale. Senior Ondrej Fukala owns a 15-1 singles record. He has won six straight. Fukala’s only loss was to Baylor’s 19th-ranked Lars Poerschke in a hard-fought tie-breaker 6-3, 6-7(1), 11-9.
Sooners Back in National Rankings
Oklahoma is ranked No. 42 in the ITA computer team ranking. In the individual rankings, sophomore Marek Velicka is ranked 43rd, while junior Alexei Ivanov is ranked 81st and senior Ondrej Fukala is the 104th best player in the nation.
Regional Success For OU
Oklahoma has not lost a regional match this season, leaving them at 6-0 when facing Region V opponents. OU has won 32 of 36 regional singles matches and 13 of 18 doubles matches, only dropping four out of 42 possible points. Four Sooners are undefeated in regional play, sophomore Marek Velicka, senior Silviu Tanasoiu, senior Ondrej Fukala are all 6-0 while freshman Ryan Thomas is 1-0.
