NORMAN, Okla. – The 12th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team defeated the North Texas Mean Green 6-4 on Wednesday evening at the OU Softball Complex. The Sooners moved to 16-3 on the season, while the Mean Green fell to 7-8. Oklahoma is now 18-0 all-time against North Texas.
 
Junior left fielder Chana’e Jones reached on a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single by senior Amber Flores. Both runners moved up on a base hit by freshman Jessica Shults. With the bases loaded, senior Linsdey Vandever hit her fifth career grand slam to give OU a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

North Texas added a run on a solo home run by junior center fielder Mariza Martinez in the top of the third inning. The Mean Green added another run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by senior Rebecca Waters to cut the OU lead to 4-2. Later in the inning, North Texas threatened with the bases loaded, but freshman pitcher Keilani Ricketts struck out pinch hitter Amber Miller to end the threat.

OU added to additional runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jones’ RBI single scored pinch runner Evan Sallis, who came in for sophomore Katie Norris after she drew a 3-1 walk. With the bases loaded, Vandever drew a walk plating Jones for the Sooners’ sixth run of the night.

North Texas added two runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Mallory Cantler and a sacrifice fly by Jennifer Smith to trim the lead to 6-4. The attempted comeback was thwarted as the Mean Green stranded two runners on base to end the game.

Vandever led OU, going 1-for-1 with five RBI. Vandever also drew two walks on the evening. Shults finished 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Starting pitcher Michelle Gascoigne pitched 3.0 innings, giving up only one run on two hits and struck out two. Ricketts pitched 2.2 innings to get the win in relief, giving up one run on one hit. Ricketts struck out five batters.

Oklahoma welcomes Utah and Northern Iowa for the Oklahoma Spring Festival this weekend. Friday’s opening game against the Utes is set for 6 p.m. CT.
