NORMAN, Okla. - Sooners defeat Missouri 1-0 to start conference play on March 27, 2009
NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma softball team opened Big 12 play on March 27, 1999, with a 1-0 over the Missouri Tigers. The win was the first of 11 conference victories during the 1999 season.
Lana Moran pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and no walks. Moran struck out two. Missouri pitcher Stephanie Falk allowed the one run on seven hits and two walks.
The widespread offensive output came from seven different Sooners as Christy Ring, LaKisha Washington, Lisa Carey, Lynette Velazquez, Ashli Barrett, Mandy Fulton and Stephanie Clark each recorded a hit. Ring scored OU’s only run.
Carey drove in the run in the bottom of the first inning. Ring singled to reach and Carey’s double brought her around to score.
The two hits for the Tigers came from center fielder (and current Iowa State head coach) Stacy Gemeinhardt and right fielder Chirsty Skouby.
The game was called in the top of the sixth inning due to inclement weather. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled.
The series against Missouri has proven to be a pivotal series in each of the last three seasons. Last year’s series in Columbia, Mo. had the Big 12 regular season title on the line. The Sooners swept the series posting a 6-2 win and a 4-2 win in order to clinch the title.
In 2007, the series was split at Missouri. The Tigers won the first game 5-1 and the Sooners claimed the second with an 8-3 victory. The 2008 season saw the Sooners regain dominance as they swept the Tigers in Norman, 8-0 and 4-3.
The 2010 series takes place this weekend as Oklahoma hosts the Tigers Saturday, March 27 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 28 at noon. Tickets remain and can be purchased online or at the softball ticket office an hour and a half prior to first pitch.
