URBANA, Ill. – The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team went 4-0 in singles Saturday on day two of the Midwest Blast, hosted by the University of Illinois.

OU won three of the four singles matches in straight-sets, the Sooners are now 8-0 in singles at the Midwest Blast.

“Singles play was about as good as I have seen all fall,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “To lose only one set in four singles matches against Illinois shows just how well the team is playing right now.”

Freshman Whitney Ritchie improves to 8-1 this fall after defeating Chelcie Abajian of Illinois, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Seniors Tara Eckel and Maria Kalashnikova both claimed their seventh wins this fall, Eckel topped Allison Falkin of Illinois, 6-1, 6-2, while Kalashnikova defeated Illinois’ Misia Kedzierski, 6-3, 6-2.

Freshman Mia Lancaster gave up just four games over two sets Saturday, beating Illinois’ Amy Allin, 6-2, 6-2.

The Sooners struggled in doubles against Notre Dame, who finished last season ranked No. 5 nationally.

“We were not able to play with Notre Dame in doubles today,” Mullins said. “They out played us from every part of the court and we could not find any solutions.”

Ritchie and Eckel lost to Notre Dame’s Shannon Mathews and Britney Sanders, 8-2, while Kalashnikova and Lancaster fell to Kristin Rafael and Julie Sabacinski, 8-2.

OU concludes its fall tournament season Sunday with the final day of the Midwest Blast.  The Sooners will face Notre Dame in singles and Memphis in doubles.
