NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf team shot an opening-round 6-over-par 294 Friday and stands in eighth place at the 54-hole Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga. The 15-team field is competing at the par-72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside.
The Sooners, who were atop the leaderboard early in the day, trail leader Georgia (-1) by seven strokes. North Florida (E) is in second place just one stroke behind the Bulldogs, while defending Brickyard Collegiate and NCAA champion Augusta State (+1) is two shots back in third. OU is just two shots out of fourth place.
"We had a chance to be really good today," said OU head golf coach Ryan Hybl, "but we just couldn't get it done."
Freshman Michael Schoolcraft and senior Ryan Sirman led the Sooners, each recording a solid even-par finish. Schoolcraft finished the day on a strong note by birdying three of his final four holes. Sirman, who was 3 under after his first eight holes, finished the day with four birdies and four bogeys. Both players are tied for 13th place out of 84 competitors.

Junior Riley Pumphrey, who was +5 after his first six holes, recovered nicely for a 1-over 73 thanks to five birdies during a nine-hole stretch. Pumphrey is tied for 23rd.
Sophomore Will Kropp, who played at Georgia as a freshman, shot a 4-over 76 in his return to the Peach State, as did sophomore Abraham Ancer in his OU debut. The Sooner duo is tied for 46th place.
OU finished the day on a strong note, registering seven combined birdies over the final four holes.
"We did make some birdies coming in and I know that will help our momentum tomorrow," said Hybl. "We need to execute tomorrow."
