NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team got off on the right foot at the 13-team Windy City Collegiate Championships in Skokie, Ill., on Monday as it fired a 301 (+13) to stand in a third-place tie.
The Sooners, who are tied with Purdue, trail leader Arizona by four strokes and second-place Michigan by one. They lead fifth-place Iowa State by two shots.
OU sophomore Ellen Mueller caught fire during the second half of the round with three consecutive birdies en route to a 1-under 71. She is tied for second place out of 68 competitors.
Senior Kendall Dye and sophomore Sara Hemingway both carded 75's (+3) in the morning and are tied for 11th place. Freshman Brooke Collins, competing in just her second collegiate tournament, shot an 80 (+8) and is tied for 45th place. Collins' sister, Chelsey Collins, a junior, carded an 83 (+11) in her first event of the season and is tied for 60th place.
Purdue's Junthima Gulyanamitta shot a 3-under 69 on the first 18 and leads Mueller by two shots.
Monday's second round is underway at the Evanston Golf Club. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday. Live scoring can be viewed at www.golfstat.com.
