NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's track and field team jumped nine spots to No. 12 in the latest rankings released Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. OU's women dropped to No. 15. The men remained in the second spot in the Midwest region, while the women held steady at No. 5.
OU's men are among five Big 12 schools ranked, including top-ranked Texas A&M, No. 9 Texas Tech, No. 10 Texas, No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 25 Kansas. The Big 12 has eight women's teams ranked - No. 3 Texas, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 7 Kansas, No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 19 Baylor, No. 23 Kansas State and No. 25 Iowa State.
Bill Kogel made history at the Stanford Invitational on April 6 with his sixth-place finish in the men's 10,000-meter run. Kogel ran a collegiate-best 28 minutes, 39.54 seconds to set a new Oklahoma program record in the event. Kogel's time is the second fastest by a collegiate this year. Kevin Schwab's 28:53.70 in the same race is the sixth fastest time this season.
Of OU's five competitors in the men's 1,500-meter run at the Stanford Invitational, two ran times ranking in the top 10 in the nation this year, including Riley Masters' new program record in the event at 3:41.80. His time is the eighth-best in the nation, while Eric Harasyn's 3:42.15 run in the same race is ninth.
George Alex lowered his program record in the men's 5,000-meter run to 13:35.27, the eighth fastest time in the nation this year.
Eric Cray is ninth on the national list in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Cray ran a collegiate-best of 50.57 seconds at the Sun Angel Classic on April 5. Luke Bryant took over the top spot in the men's discus throw with a collegiate best throw of 202 feet, four inches on April 14 at the John Jacobs Invitational.
Brittany Borman overtook the No. 1 spot in the javelin after her win in the women's javelin throw at the Sun Angel Classic on April 5. Borman's mark of 194-11 is an Oklahoma program record. The American and NCAA-leading throw set a Sun Angel Stadium facility and meet record and is tied for the 15th best throw in the world this year. The mark ranks Borman sixth on the United States all-time outdoor list and ranks her seventh on the collegiate list. Amongst American collegiate women, Borman is fifth. The throw also meets the Olympic B standard for the event.
Borman is also sixth in the discus with her best mark of 183-0 coming on April 14 at the John Jacobs Invitational. Ti'Anca Mock is seventh in the women's long jump with a season's best wind-aided mark of 21-6 on March 28 at the Texas Relays.
Tia Brooks extended her program record in the women's shot put on April 21 with the second-best mark in the nation this year. Brooks took third in the event with a throw of 59-6.25 at the Mt. SAC Relays.
